Blackboard at Truman

Exporting and Importing Courses

Spring '08 course shells will be available in the new Blackboard V7.3 system on January 1st, 2008.

In order to copy content (but not user data) to new courses, instructors will need to do an export/import operation similarly to what is done when transitioning from semester to semester.  The main difference is that instead of a "copy" process.  Instructors will actually export the materials to their desktop or other local location FROM the http://bb6.truman.edu system and then import them TO the new http://blackboard.truman.edu system.

Step-by-step instructions follow.  Please submit a ticket with the IT Services Help Desk (helpdesk@truman.edu or 660-785-4544)  if you encounter difficulty or need additional assistance.  A Blackboard support specialist will follow-up with you.

Follow the steps below for moving course materials from the old Blackboard 6.3 system to the new Blackboard 7.3 system.
For a more detailed treatment of this process see Chapter 9 of the V6.3 Instructors' Manual (pdf) and Chapter 10 of the V7.3 Instructors' Manual (pdf).

Export

  1. Go into the Control Panel of the course with content to be exported  {Log into the http://bb6.truman.edu system}
  2. Select Export Course
Note:  Archiving saves everything including student information while Exporting saves just content
  3. Click the “Export” button
  4. With the export, select the content you wish to export.
  5. Submit
  6. A receipt will appear when this process has completed.  Follow the instructions to save the export package.
  7. A pop-up box will offer the option to open or Save to Disk.  Select "Save to Disk" and download to a local location (e.g. the desktop, My Documents area or the Y:\ drive.
Note:  the downloaded file is a .ZIP packaged file, DO NOT unzip the package before importing to the new system.  Opening the .ZIP file and changing any of the files in the Exported Course package will result in unstable and unpredictable behavior when the course is imported.

Import

This feature only works with Exported content; Archives cannot be loaded this way. Only an administrator can restore an archived file.

  1. Log into the new Blackboard 7.3 System http://blackboard.truman.edu .
  2. Go to the course into which you want to import content.
  3. Go into the Control Panel --> Course Options --> Select Import Package.
  4. Browse to and select the exported .ZIP file saved previously; click Open.
  5. Choose the Course Materials you want to import and click Submit.
  6. You will receive a confirmation screen and an email when the process is completed. (Note:  The email may contain several warnings.  Our testing has not identified insurmountable issues related to these warnings; common problems include duplicated buttons - which can be easily removed.
  7. Please review your course following the import.  If course materials are non-functional or you encounter serious issues, please submit a ticket to the IT Services Help Desk (helpdesk@truman.edu | 660-785-4544 ) so that a Blackboard Support Specialist can follow-up with you.

Note:  See the manual for detailed descriptions of exactly what occurs with each type of content as it is unpacked.

As with any move of data from one major system to another, there may be some need for button clean-up, materials rearrangement, etc. following the import.  We ask for your understanding and patience as we work together to resolve any issues with the new system.  Should you encounter any problems or difficulties, please submit a ticket the IT Services Help Desk (helpdesk@truman.edu).
